I sometimes find it hard to describe to my friends in New York what an amazing community I left to start the next phase of my life here.  Explaining the combination of the pastoral, the urban, the suburban, the creative, the stagnant, the high and low that is Norman and its surroundings surpasses my skills of articulation, fab as they sometimes are.

It becomes a little overwhelming to try to make clear the incredible things my friends have done and created and inspired, and the things that their friends have done and created and inspired, and the things that people that no one knows in that same community have done and created and inspired— all of it grown out of the syncretic experience of the 405/918/580.  It becomes easier to point everyone to The Soft Bulletin, Bill Hader, and a rodeo, and remind my friends in food that Rick Bayless is from Oklahoma (and we have great Oaxacan food) and my literary friends that John Berryman is from Oklahoma, and then start talking about sports, because surely there’s someone from  Oklahoma on your favorite team, and chances are we had a Comm Theory class together.

Which is all to say that today I stumbled on a blog that does a much better job than I of pinpointing what people of our age and persuasion are up to in Native America.  Good work, Apache House.  I’m interested.
